Live and let live.
When you have the upper hand, be merciful.
It was early morning when one of the workers spotted a young boy stealing grapes in the vineyard /ˈvɪnjəd/ .
The boy, who looked to be around seven or eight years old, had already filled his pockets with grapes and was still searching for more ripe ones.
Some of the workers caught the boy and watched over him while others went to inform Uncle Li about the incident.
On their way back to the vineyard, Uncle Li and the workers ran into Zhang Tom and Zhao John who were passing by. Seeing Uncle Li's troubled expression, they asked what had happened.
Uncle Li explained the situation to them.
When they arrived at the vineyard, they saw the boy standing there, covered in dirt and wearing ragged /ˈræɡɪd/ clothes. He remained silent no matter what questions were asked.
Two rows of grape trellises /ˈtrɛlɪsɪz/ had been knocked down, causing Uncle Li great distress. Tom and John, seeing this, didn't know what to say.
Some of the workers suggested finding the boy’s parents to demand compensation, while others wanted to take the child to the police station.
But then, Uncle Li turned to the boy and asked, "Do you think what you did is right?" The boy shook /ʃʊk/ his head without speaking.
Uncle Li then told everyone, "Let him go." Everyone was surprised. Uncle Li continued to say, "Yes, let him go."
He instructed the workers to fix the fallen trellises /ˈtrɛlɪsɪz/ and see if they could save the plants.
After the boy left, everyone got back to work. Uncle Li walked out of the vineyard with Tom and John.
He said to them, "This boy is mischievous /ˈmɪstʃɪvəs/ but he looks stubborn /ˈstʌbən /. He knows that what he did was wrong. After this experience, he probably won’t do it again. But if we take him to the police station, it could affect his schooling and leave a dark shadow in his heart. Live and let live.
John remarked, "Uncle Li, as a retired teacher, you have indeed given this child a chance."
Tom added, "Yes, when you have the upper hand, be merciful. Uncle Li not only thought about the child's education but also considered his psychological well-being. It’s truly thoughtful."
