Thousands of bridges carry travelers across the United States. The scariest bridges in the country are often regarded as frightening due to their steepness or tendency to swing. However, the scariest bridge in Kansas will have you on the edge of your seat for a completely different reason.

Theorosa’s Bridge is the Scariest Bridge in Kansas

Theorosa’s Bridge is the scariest in the state of Kansas due to the many urban legends of hauntings that surround it. The original bridge was first constructed from iron and wood many decades ago. This bridge carried travelers across Jester Creek in Sedgewick County, KS.

Over the years, Theorosa’s Bridge has burned down and been rebuilt multiple times. The bridge’s current version was constructed in 1991 so that cars could continue to cross the creek. However, the urban legends surrounding this bridge are what makes it really interesting and spooky.

Legends Surrounding Theorosa’s Bridge

Writers, historians, and Kansas locals have reported various versions of the story that led to the haunting of Theorosa’s Bridge. In one version recorded by The IC in the ICT, a young Native American woman gives birth to an illegitimate baby with a white man. The woman throws the baby in the creek to hide her shame and later drowns herself too.

Another version, reported by Legends of America, states that Native Americans kidnapped a baby named Theorosa from settlers passing through the area in the late 19th century. Theorosa’s mother left the wagon train to search for her child, and her grief-stricken cries can still be heard to this day.

Several other stories surrounding a baby that was lost or drowned in the creek serve to create the haunted and creepy vibe surrounding Theorosa’s Bridge.

One legend even states that anyone who stands on the bridge and claims to be Theorosa will be attacked by a ghost and thrown into a creek. It’s worth noting that none of these urban legends have ever been confirmed and no recent tragedies on Theorosa’s Bridge have been reported.
